The Joy of Language The Guide to Language and Learning for Parents and Caregivers Tara J Tuck 9780996962001 Books Reviews

I actually bought this book for my daughter because I had heard such great things about it. I thought it would be a very beneficial resource for her as she is raising her children now. I read the book myself before giving it to my daughter, and I fell in love with it. It gave me insights into the art of language that I had never considered before. It opened my mind to wonderful ways of communicating to children (or grandchildren, or the elderly, as I was a caregiver for my mother who was aging and becoming less able to communicate.) I found the book to be easy to understand, and loaded with hundreds of easy and fun activities for parents and their little ones. I wish I had had this book when I was raising my daughter. But, at least, I can now use these ideas with my grandchildren as they continue to develop their speech and language skills, as well as their social skills. I highly recommend this book a great resource for parents with young children, or caregivers for the elderly.
My 10 year old great niece, Janie, mis a confident, happy young lady with a bright future. This wasn’t always the case however. She was the middle child with two brothers who demanded a lot of attention. As she began to speak nothing seemed awry, and naturally no one was looking for anything unusual in her development. Her efforts to speak were deemed “baby talk” and were often viewed as cute. As time progressed, however, her language became incoherent, and she was unable to make herself understood.mmthis led to bokeh frustration and a loss of self esteem. She felt isolated as her friends could communicate with each other, but she could not join in. After a few years of professional intervention she has overcome her language challenges and is performing beautifully on every level. Had her parents and extended family had more knowledge of childhood la gauge development as so thoughtfully outli ed in The Joy of Language, years of worry could well ha e been avoided.
As an educator myself, in a family full of teachers, I've found the insights in this book valuable and clearly presented. The complexity of human language is the core skill that distinguishes humans from other intelligent creatures. The sooner young children are exposed to rich language and supported in their own use of it, the sooner and more well-developed the child's own language skills will become. Language facility is the foundation for learning and understanding.

Professor Tuck opens doors to enhancing language education and brings to readers of her book the benefit of her own decades of research and experience in the field.

An insightful resource for caregivers to young children during the seminal period of their early lives in human language.
I bought the Joy of Language because i wanted to know more as a grandparent. One of our grandchildren seems to be slow in language expression. This easy to read book is packed with lots of practical steps parents. teachers, grandparents can do to help encourage language development in children. There is quite a lot of detailed explanation about language and how children learn and grow in this area.. At the end of each chapter is the Share the joy section with simple and easy to apply suggestions and fun games that you can use with your children. Really common sense approaches and interactive ideas for the lay person which I found very helpful.
It covers a lot of territory and is a valuable resource . I highly recommend it.
As a grandmother of four children under the age of 10, it has been a gift to all family members particularly as they start school . It is been a useful tool to track needs developmental needs and successes.
I was so impressed with this book, the wealth of information contained, and the way it was presented. The book cover so many aspects of helping a child to learn, and the information is wonderfully easy to understand and apply. The format of the book is question and answer which makes it easy to access specific information for a parent /babysitter /teacher. Also at the end of each chapter there are suggestions and exercises on enjoyable ways to interact and teach your child throughout each day —not taking extra time, but using the time you have already spent with your child.
The author is covered so much in this book about the development of language and learning, the whole process of learning to communicate from birth parentheses (10 pages of milestones!)— how children learn to speak in words and sentences, and even the beginning of math and reading skills. She also included the development of language in our relationships and socialization skills. The author discusses body language ,facial expression, and tone of voice . She also focuses on the bonding with the parent/caregiver and the child through language.
I personally think this book makes us think a lot about not losing this precious gift of face to face human interaction. We introduce the world to our children through language, teaching them to interact, to be curious about learning, and understand others. It is clear that once children know the joy of language, the world is open to them.

I highly recommend the joy of language to parents, grandparents, and to everyone who cares for children!
